Chichen Itza

Most experts aggre that the ruined city of Chichen Itza in Mexico was the ceremonial centre of the maya people from about AD 550 to AD 800.

One of the best preserved ruins is w building knows as the Temple of Kulkulkan. Kulkulkan was a Mya god and in many carvings he looks like giant feathered serpent. The temple is a flat-topped, square-based pytamid with 91 steps up each side - one step for each day of the year. The top of the pyramid represents the 365th day. Twice a year (once in the spring and once in the autumn), when the Sun is directly above the equator shadows are cost on the sides of the pyramid that give the effect of a serpent slithering down the steps.
